well, quake.ie do it like this. You start off with 1 star. Every 20 posts u get a star of a particular colour. So at 80+ posts you have 5 stars. When you get to 100 posts your star changes colour and then goes back to 1 star.

To be honest, they have it arseways. It should be you start with 1 star, the 1 star changes colour every 20 posts until you get to 100, then you have 2 stars, the last of which changes colours every 20 posts. In UIE's case though I would make the change every 40 or 50 posts tho since this place is a lot more active than quake.ie

[Forum] - User Rating Stars
As has been suggested on the Problems/Suggestions thread, I'm looking at coding a star-rating system for users, that will be based on the number of posts they have on the forum.

There's also the possibility of including their nodes/comments on the rest of the site, and adding weights for each one, so that nodes (eg, articles and stuff) get greater bonuses than, say, a forum post.

I've not thought this through completely yet, so I'm looking for inspiration.

I'm thinking of having a set of 25 stars - in groups 5, in 5 levels.
If each star is, say, 250 'points', then it will take a user 1,250 forum posts (each @1 point) to reach the next level.
For every 250 points they gain, they get given an extra star on their current level.

If nodes (eg: articles) are worth, say, 3 or even 5 points each, comments on those are worth 1 point. This would be to try to encourage users to give back more to the community.

...Anyone else have any suggestions?

The whole of idea of rating is to encourage people to post more. They are more likely to do this when they are within reach of another level. 250 points is way too big of a gap between levels. Ill explain further my idea above to make it clearer in posts
0-19 posts = 1 green star
20-39 posts = 1 blue star
40-59 posts = 3 red star
60-79 posts = 4 yellow star
80-99 posts = 5 gold star with flashy outline or something(maybe something symbolising a godlike or something)
100-119 posts = 1 gold 1 green
120-139 posts = 1 gold 1 blue
140-159 posts = 1 gold 1 red

You get the picture. This way people can keep gaining stars up to whatever you limit the max stars to be, 10 or whatever. Or when they reach the 10 stars they get some l33t godlike thing. who knows.

Obviously with this system tho every1 with over 1000 posts will have 10 stars so maybe make the increments 50 posts rather than 20

Serious answer: Stars sound good. 1 star which changes colour then 2 etc etc
Sarcastic answer: fix the existing problems before introducing new ones. This is a "wish list" item, not a problem.

I agree with Screwball here.
I'm going to work on this - but tbh I've no idea how to begin. It's logically alot more complicated to do it dar's way, but I can see why he want's it like that.

Until it's done however, we should work on a better solution to the one I've coded already.
Can you suggest a better scaling system Dar?

Tip: You only ever have to work out 2 things, how many stars and the colour of the final star as all the preceeding ones will be gold (or whatever). Do it mathematically, not in a switch.

Whatever way it'll end up being - it'll include a mathematical "MOD" function to produce a remainder that'll be used on teh final calculation.
I suppose

Probably

<50 == omg wtf
<100 == yay
<150 == hmmmm
<200 == wowsers
<300 == inspector gadget
<400 == stfu
<500 == omg stfu
<750 == ffs - stop posting
<1000 == you just can't stop
<1250 == don't care any more
<1500 == nope, dont care.
<1750 == not working *lalalalala*
<2000 == okok, just SHUT UP!
<2500 == awh
<3000 == i give up
<3500 == ...
<4000 == ah ffs shut up
<4500 == blah blah blah
<5000 == I'm going to ban you
<6000 == ah fuck it

how about stars (or pic of UT weapon, health or armour pickup or whatever) AND caption as already existing?

09 Feb 2006 - 14:2532117
That's my intention nait

09 Feb 2006 - 14:2932119
k, didn't read all your posts as you post so much but i'll take your word for it.

09 Feb 2006 - 15:2432134
do we really need this ?.....its stupid imo.
Then it seems the more stars/posts u have the more "valuable" ur contribution to this forum is but posts by some1 who makes like a 5% of the posts others do can have had a more "valuable" contribution.

Also this could increase the amount of Unnesessary posts cuz some1 wants to have another star, cluttering the forum with posts.

If u do want to do sommin like this its more fun to have a few custom "titles" under ur nick like some forums have for example..... linked to the time they have been registered or sommin.

/edit
cba to read whole thread.... if sommin has been said allready....soz

I'm partially in agreement with ScrooLoose ... but you could also raise the same point on post counts

I really dont care about postcounts..... if i where u i would have disabled them

But stars do have more like an "oooooh ....pretty" look to them then just a bunch of numbers.
"cant wait to get my next star" ..... its like lvl'ing in WoW zoro

i'm not even going to try to decipher that crap. I've a headache so just tell me what it means :/

15 Feb 2006 - 14:2632727
<hands zoro an aspirin>

The current rating system does not inform users that a particular poster is an Admin of any kind, just translates their postcount into "noob" or "unstoppable" etc.

What I'm trying to say is that admins should be identified as such, so
if the post was created by a site admin, tell them that
if the post was created by a forum mod (if such a thing exists) ie a user who is a mod in the forum where the post is displayed - then tell them. That same user may of course not be a mod in another forum, so the normal "postcount" rules would apply.

Any clearer?

Much, thanks - apologies for snapping...

It'll be a whore to implement as I see it. The Drupal system doesn't _quite_ work like that, but the security subsystem that I wrote to make the drupal one work with my forum module can be modified to handle that kind of information.

It would've certainly increase the load times of pages though. I'm not quite sure how much that would be, but it'd probably be measurable.

15 Feb 2006 - 14:4532735
Ahh - I would have thought that all the info was already available - you're about to display data from the userfile already. If it's likely to cause a problem (it's slow enough as it is) then don't bother.

how about even a list of admins/mods at the top of whatever forum?
