Even our apples-to-apples real gaming tests confirmed that the 8800 GTS is faster than the HD 2900 XT and nowhere close to the GeForce 8800 GTX, yet here sits 3DMark showing us the opposite!

This goes out to anyone who puts any faith into 3DMark, or any other synthetic benchmark or scripted timedemo, those number simply mean nothing in relation to real gaming performance. If you care about knowing how these video cards compare in actual games there is no other way to get that information than playing the games themselves just as you would do as a gamer.

The Radeon HD 2900 XT is an inefficient power hog. Using the 2900 XT card will cost you more power than a GeForce 8800 GTX while delivering to you sub-8800 GTS performance. That is not a small difference in terms of performance per watt.

Going back to what we said in our opening statements about the power spec being stated to us as scaling from 175w – 225w will require a bit of explaining. First off, that is a huge gap, and second I just did not understand at first why they would specify this. It all comes back to the actual 2900 ASIC. As this GPU scales in MHz it leaks power like a sieve and their production on this part is varied. So, one part may use 175w at peak performance at a specific temperature while another may use 225w at another temperature.

Using our 750 watt PSU, we had no issues running our single 2900 XT through the power tests above both at 24C and at 55C. Testing 2900 XT CrossFire, we ran into a problem. While stable at 24C, our CrossFire system would fail any sort of load test at 55C. We did identify this to not be due to a faulty PSU as we fully replicated the problem on another PSU. If you are looking to run a Radeon 2900 XT on any fairly robust enthusiast system, you might allot yourself an extra 100 to 150 watts above ATI’s PSU recommendations while taking into account your own personal usage model.
